Small Bites Adventure Club activities connect to educational and developmental standards. By cooking with kids, these standards are reinforced in a hands-on, real-world way.

National Afterschool Association, Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards:
Healthy Eating and Social Support (HESS).
HESS 1: Function of food in the program is to promote healthy eating and good nutrition.
HESS 2: Students’ participation in food selection, distribution, preparation, and clean-up.
HESS 3: Staff model & promote healthy eating. (A) Staff members sit and eat the daily program snack or meal with students. (B) Staff discuss the health benefits of snack components with children.
HESS 4: Parents are engaged with the program’s emphasis on healthy eating. Educational materials (that meet standards for curriculum above) are made available to parents/families through pamphlets, newsletter, email blasts, or other means.
Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards (GELDS).
STANDARD PDM2: The child will participate in activities related to nutrition.
Explain that bodies need many different nutrients to grow, and a great way to get these nutrients is through the food they eat!
STANDARD PDM6: The child will demonstrate fine motor skills.
Encourage children to pluck the herb leaves from the stem one by one during the cooking activity.
STANDARD CD-MA1: The child will organize, represent, and build knowledge of number and quantity.
During the taste test, children can count the number of children who (1) tried the food and (2) liked the food.
STANDARD CD-MA2: The child will manipulate, compare, describe relationships, and solve problems using number and quantity.
Using the results of the taste test, children can create bar and circle graphs and share the results with school administration.
STANDARD CD-SC3: The child will demonstrate knowledge related to living things and their environments.
Observe the produce in the box, and discuss where it comes from and how it grows: under the ground or above ground? What kind of seed? Read the Farmer Card together and gather more information.
Georgia Agricultural Education Elementary Standards of Excellence
These standards are designed to allow elementary students to explore Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources. More standard connections can be found at www.georgiaaged.org.
Agricultural Systems
AFNR-AS: Investigate and develop an understanding of agricultural systems such as Agricultural Mechanics; Plant Systems; Animal Systems; and/or Food Systems.
KAS4: Discuss the basic needs of plants.
1AS3: Discuss parts of a plant (roots, leaf, stem, flower, etc.).
1AS4: Measure using various tools (rulers, yardsticks, measuring tapes, cups and spoons, etc.).
5AS7: Differentiate and understand parts of plants and how they are utilized in agriculture.
Foundations of Agriculture
AFNR-FA: Explore and communicate the importance of agriculture and its impact on daily life.
2FA2: Identify the nutritional value of agricultural products in a healthy diet.
3FA2: Use a map to locate the geographic regions of Georgia; locate and compare the geographic regions such as crops/fruit production, livestock/poultry, native trees and plants, wildlife, fall line, and forestry.
4FA2: Connect the relationship between weather, the environment, and agriculture.
5FA1: Construct a model of the supply chain from origination to end product of commodities/fiber/natural resources.
AFNR-LCR: Develop an understanding of leadership skills and characteristics for career readiness while exploring youth leadership opportunities and careers in agriculture as indicated by the National FFA Organization.
KLCR1: Describe the characteristics of agricultural jobs.
1LCR3: Identify a local agricultural leader and describe their impact on your community.
4LCR1: Develop and apply verbal and non-verbal communication skills such as public speaking/presentations.
Natural Resource Systems
AFNR-NRS: Develop and build an understanding of the area of forestry, environmental, and natural resource systems.
2NRS2: Define and identify best practices in agriculture in the school’s region.
5NRS2: Describe the benefits and the importance of conservation and recycling of natural resources.
