Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? What did you study in college?
My name's Chey Douglas and I'm a 26-year-old artist from Atlanta, GA. I love to sing, write, create art, hang out with my dog, and learn about plants. For college, I attended Western Kentucky University, and studied public relations and environmental sustainability.
How did you get interested in food and food education?
I got interested in food/food education after volunteering on a black-owned farm called Everybody Eats Together in Ashview Heights. I was fascinated by the fact that huge farms were hidden within the folds of the city, providing so much food to these communities that live in food deserts. Ever since then I've become consumed with spreading the word of where to get healthy food and how to grow your own healthy foods.
What do you love about working at Small Bites Adventure Club?
There are so many things that I love about working for Small Bites Adventure Club! I love that we get to work with the youth and teach them about food and health! I love getting amazing recipes and fun food facts from our Explorer Kits! And, I love working in a laid-back environment with other motivated women.
What are you most excited about doing with Small Bites?
In general, I'm just excited to continue to grow and learn more from the amazing people around me here at Small Bites.
What is your favorite veggie that you didn't care for as a kid? How did you learn to love it?
As a kid, for the longest time I would never eat tomatoes, but I would destroy some packets of ketchup. I can't really remember why I had so much hatred for tomatoes and loved ketchup, but nowadays I absolutely love tomatoes and can eat a Roma tomato like an apple. I learned to love tomatoes through my home economics class in high school. There are so many different ways to use a tomato so once I learned that everything else just kind of fell into place and I started to appreciate tomatoes more.
What's your secret talent?
I know how to read, write, and speak French pretty fluently because I took it for 10 years.
